Anger that arrives too fast and too big
It is never the thing. It is the dishwasher, the tone, the third small interruption. The anger is out before any part of you has decided anything, and the regret arrives about four minutes later.
You will recognise it if
- The trigger is trivial and the response is not.
- You are already speaking before you have chosen to.
- The regret is immediate and does not prevent the next time.
- You are calm and reasonable everywhere except with the people closest to you.
- Afterwards you cannot reconstruct what actually set it off.
Anger is usually the second feeling
In most fast outbursts, something else came first and lasted a fraction of a second: feeling dismissed, powerless, humiliated, unseen. Anger arrives immediately after because it is more bearable than any of those.
That is why the trigger looks trivial from outside. The dishwasher is not the event. Being treated as though your effort is invisible is the event, and the dishwasher was simply where it landed.
Why "count to ten" rarely holds
Counting is a delay applied after the escalation. It sometimes buys a few seconds and it does not touch the cause, which is why it works for a week and then stops.
The lasting change comes from being able to name the first feeling. Naming it takes the pressure off the second one, because anger is largely doing the job of not feeling the first.
Find the half-second before
After the next outburst, do not review the argument. Go back to the instant before the anger and ask what you felt for that fraction of a second: ignored, small, blamed, caught out.
Do this several times and one word will keep coming back. That word is the actual pattern. Everything downstream of it becomes much easier to interrupt once it has a name.
Working on this with Nolum
Reading about a pattern in general is one thing; seeing it in the situation you were in yesterday is another. In Nolum you describe what happened in a few sentences and get a card naming the root cause behind your reaction, plus one concrete quest to change it in real life. The first card and the first quest are free, no credit card.

Why is it worse with people I love?
Because the stakes are higher and the guard is lower. The people closest to you are the ones who can reach the vulnerable feeling underneath, which is exactly why the defence fires hardest there.
When is this beyond self-work?
If anger is frightening people, damaging things, or you cannot pull out of it, that is work to do with a professional. This page is about the ordinary pattern, and it is not a substitute for help when help is what is needed.
Patterns that usually travel together
This page describes a behavioural pattern and is not medical or psychological advice. Nolum is a self-reflection tool, not a replacement for therapy. If you are in crisis, contact a qualified professional.
