Procrastination: when it is not about time management

The strange part is which tasks get delayed. Not the boring ones, those get done. The one that matters, the one tied to who you want to be, is the one that sits untouched for three weeks.

You will recognise it if

  • You are productive all day and avoid the one task that counts.
  • A new system works for two weeks and then stops.
  • You need pressure to start, and you manufacture it if it is missing.
  • Opening the file produces a physical reluctance you cannot argue with.
  • You do the research phase forever because research is not yet exposure.

What is being avoided is not the work

Procrastination on things you do not care about is ordinary and uninteresting. Procrastination on the thing you care about most is a different animal, and it has a consistent structure: the task carries a verdict.

Finish it and you find out whether you are any good. Avoid it and the question stays open, and an open question is more comfortable than a closed one you might not like.

Why the next productivity system will also fail

Systems work on the assumption that the obstacle is organisation. When the obstacle is that finishing produces a judgement, better organisation just makes the avoidance more efficient: you will build a beautiful setup and use it on everything except the one task.

This is not an argument against systems. It is an argument that the system is not where the problem lives.

A first move that respects the actual obstacle

Make the next step so small that it cannot produce a verdict. Not "write the chapter", but "open the file and write one bad sentence". The point is not progress, it is removing the evaluation from the action.

Then, separately, write down what you are afraid the finished thing will prove. Naming it takes most of its power, because in words it is usually far less total than it felt as a mood.

Working on this with Nolum

Reading about a pattern in general is one thing; seeing it in the situation you were in yesterday is another. In Nolum you describe what happened in a few sentences and get a card naming the root cause behind your reaction, plus one concrete quest to change it in real life. The first card and the first quest are free, no credit card.

Questions

Is procrastination laziness?

Almost never. Lazy people do not exhaust themselves avoiding one task while doing five others. The energy spent avoiding is usually higher than the energy the task would have taken.

What about ADHD?

Attention difficulties are a real and different thing, and they can sit alongside this pattern. If avoidance is broad rather than aimed at the meaningful task specifically, that is worth exploring with a professional.
